Never one to rest much, I worked on jewellery over the past week or so as a break from sewing.

I continued on from last year's Masons on Acid series.

Cults, religion and conspiracy theories dominated my holiday.

Thesepieces were designed to protect you.* We protect ourselves from theelements- an umbrella, a jumper or sunscreen. We stay safe withlocks, bullet proof vests and air-bags, smoke alarms and crashpostures. But how do you protect yourself from sinister,brain-washing-credit card taking- money-laundering-usually sexuallydriven -cult leader religions? Not a simple answer. Or is it?Although not road tested yet, these pieces flip the bird (or the evileye in this case) to these false prophets.

These ‘Grand Pooh Bah’ pieces warmly give the finger to perverse, patriarchal, secretive, and ultimately evil cults, religions and ‘societies’.

Media Boast...Er, I Mean Boost

Like most creatives who aim to sell their wares at little bit of publicity is always a good thing.

So I was happy to get out and about a little bit this month. A little bit of television, red-carpet, web and print.

Reece Mastin from X-Factor Australia, who won this years competition, singing with Kylie Minogue, sported my jewellery in the finals and well, all the time really.

There was also Dave, from the band Potbelleez, wearing my clothes to the Aria Awards (Australian Music Awards). That's him on the right.

There was also an article written about me in Jeweller Magazine which was so nice.

I also received an email today from Seth Apter saying my (smart-arse) words have appeared in his upcoming book The Pulse of Mixed Media.

The cool Conscious Alterations used my pants on their latest shoot for bags and accessories. Great photos.

And finally (!) my clothes appeared in the Fair@Square ethical and sustainable fashion fair in Melbourne. It was great to see my clothes on some real models and the whole event got some big media attention.

One Week: Two Coats (Part Two)

Dieselstream Coat

Steampunkish coat made from old painters drop-sheet.

Vintage British military buttons adorn the once immaculate coat that has now seen better days.

The silk scarf, perfect for a distinguished pilot and gentleman.

Very little waste as almost all the sheet was used creating details and pockets.

The frayed and tattered hem was the starting point of the whole project.

One week:two coats. (Part One)

Lab Coat made from old US Army pup tent.

Utilising the edges that contains the press studs I manipulated the pattern to retain these features. The centre front and front hem is one edge, the rear hem and storm flap another.

The removable 'blast' collar and collar are from the edges too.

The lab coat becomes exotic with 'fish tail' panels on hem and cuffs.

The cuffs are anatomically based- long sleeves that wrap around the hand offering back of hand protection from toxic drips.

Raw-edge-flat-felled seams and raw edges are use as much as possible.

Fits like a glove, weather-proof, reclaimed, accurately finished and first off the line from my own new pattern. I think I have just lifted my game.

Back in the groove

After a big break I'm back in the groove. Sewing (and posting)again.

This lightweight coat has a coated denim body, organic cotton jersey sleeves and wool scarf/ hoodie and leather detail.

Organic unbrushed cotton pants with raw edges, drawstring waist and button up cuffs.

Cotton shorts with drop crotch and drawstring waist.

Double layer singlet and organic cotton beanie. (Channelling Sons of Anarchy here)

Of course grrl+dog took the photos. I'm listing them on Etsy and selling a few at the markets. It's kinda fun designing for two hemispheres at the same time.

It's taken a moment for us to recover from the loss of our dog and have gone from excessive drinking and lethargy to constant activity, early morning walks, obsessive cleaning and sorting. Each day gets a little better.

We also opened a shop together on Etsy called desmondandmollyjones. This is not a 'flog-blog',(cough cough) but check it out. It's full of all our ~~junk~~ wonderful vintage pieces and supplies. We are trying to list new items each day.

My first painting in six or seven years is of our beautiful and protective hound Baxter.

Dingo X with an attitude to match. He used to steal live chickens, roast chickens and neighbourhood dog's bowls with food still in it. His days of bringing home snacks are over. Mustering a short walk or two is all he does now. I would be surprised if he lasts to Christmas.

Thrown away in a plastic bag is no start for a dog- and he never forgot it. Cautious of people, especially 'farmer' types, made him a great guard dog but not so friendly. As we say- "He is not a patting dog." 'Dog whisperers' included.

He had a brother, we found out a couple of years ago, who was known as the 'wild dog' of the local area and lived free, stealing food. He was eventually adopted by a dog lover. As soon as we saw the photos and heard the story we knew it his sibling.

I had to paint this now while he is still alive. Tears and oil paint don't mix.

On holiday dog.

We will miss you when you go.

Market Place

For the past few months I have had the fun and pleasure to be selling my wares direct to the public via my market stall.

For those who can't make it to Young Australian Designers Market or Eveleigh Artisans Markets this is what my stall is looking like.

The markets have been fun and successful so far. It's nice to meet new people and get some direct feedback on my work.

Both markets are under cover- a blessing the past cold months and a joy to come during summer.

New Adventures in Fashion Hacktavism

I have just discovered the world of Otto Von Busch and the amazing movement of Fashion Hacktavism.

Hackers create, as opposed to 'crackers' who destroy things (like computer systems). Likewise, fashion hacktavism concerns creating or re-creating fashion using fashion. A similar term for it is upcycling- that is using an existing garment to create another garment. But Fashion Hacktavism goes much deeper and is also concerned with the social implications of reuse and the reverse of designers telling the consumer what they want.

Two pieces here are his designs for Fashion Hacktavism- the (Marcs) jacket is now a waistcoat, with the sleeves as ties at the back. The pants-of similar good quality Australian made design- have been taken apart, pleated down the outside leg, narrowed, taken in at the waist and given elastic cuffs.

Most of us have taken a pair of old jeans in to make them narrower or cut the sleeves of an old t-shirt. This is the same principle- that pair of jeans went from 70's to 80's with a quick sew job. These take thrift shop finds to a whole new level.

It's time this week to look back at past projects. Projects never photographed till now. I created these wall hangings almost ten years ago. All fabric was from thrift stores. Hand stitched.

Da Vinci Coat

Ol' Leonardo would have been partial to a cool coat. He was way ahead of his time- his techniques and styles not fully embraced for hundreds of years.

Air travel? Not a problem. Anatomy study? Sorted.

Hanging out with Machiavelli and Michelangelo? Cool.

Finish something? Yeah, If he didn't get distracted by something else.

Inspire thousands of artist from Reubens to Botticelli? All in a days work.

Create the most famous paintings in the whole world? Only Da Vinci has this title.

Be stylish? Hard not to think he wasn't.

Maybe he would have liked my coat made from an old cotton canvas drop sheet.

Toggle closure made from old, paint splattered paintbrush. The drawstring cords gather and distort the silhouette.

Extra long sleeves, sleeve gussets, three external pockets with paintbrush holders and one hidden internal pocket.Perspective line stitching on the back.

I think he would have liked those touches.

Next up was being featured in a Belle Armoire Jewellery tutorial. I have yet to receive the issue but here is the cover.

But the real treat was the delivery of my new baby. I'm talking about my industrial sewing machine here.

I already have a real baby, well he is eighteen now so not much of a baby. Actually my son rebelled against his upbringing and now works for an insurance company. Sigh. You try so hard with kids and they just spit in your eye and get a 'real' job. He rejects insurance claims for a living- if you knew him you would think that is a perfect job for him. He is planning to go to uni next year- wants to study Legal Ethics (?)

Anyway, I digress, here is my new baby...

Today I received in the mail some beautiful organic cotton knit from Certton. The cotton is grown, chemical free (certified) in India and woven right here in Sydney- not more than ten kilometers away from home. They have a great collection of colours, although I only use black, and the prices are very reasonable. I just can't find enough dead stock or thrift store fabric for my needs so to use organic cotton is the best thing I can do.

Even got some labels today for my new range of T-shirts. (Azirca, before you ask, no, those labels are not organic)

And, because this is a bit of a random post I shall leave you with my latest project- a Victorian-style military coat in wool crepe. The wool was from a wonderful thrift store specializing in fabric and knitting supplies- The Fabric Cave. If you live in Sydney, check them out for a real bargain. Bought 10 meters of wool crepe for $20!

When I first started sewing it was just a big game- lots of fun with no thought. As I have moved from hobby sewer to selling my clothes there has been a big shift in attitude. One thing that has given me a strong direction is ethical and sustainable fashion.

When it came to jewellery I really avoided using new products. If I did buy sheet metal my supplier only sold 100% recycled metal. Most of my materials were found objects- old junk.

Now that I'm sewing I have found that the material found in most fabric stores (and most clothing) is having a damaging effect on the planet and many third world people.

Over 22% of all insecticides and 11% of all pesticides are used on cotton.
Lead, nickel and formaldehyde are common textile making chemicals
UK alone discards over 1 million of tonnes of clothes a year
China, India and many other countries use child and slave labor to grow and produce materials for clothing

The Thin Red Line, James Jones

Born of an army issue pup tent circa 1969. Seen the cruelty of war. Vietnam. The war nobody won. The war only wanted by the generals, the cruel.

This tent survives. Only the inanimate survives war. Emotionless to death, to its surroundings, to injustice, to horror.

Blood rinsed from it's fiber, undisturbed it waited. The infantryman stored it well- he knew how.

Moved along, it traveled to me. What tribute can I bestow upon this cloth? What can I preserve and give new meaning to? I handle it like a shroud. Maybe it was at one time? Time and tide has weathered my friend, this cloth.

I liberate this sacred piece; give it new life and meaning. This protector continues on. Re-birthed, unlike so many souls from this war.

Wars to end all wars? Wars on terror? These words are hollow. They mean nothing to the dead.

Moving Right Along

My jewellery bench has been seriously neglected the past month or so. It was hard to get into the groove after such a long break.

The other problem is I feel I have moved on from my earlier pieces and wanted my new jewellery to reflect the clothing I have been making.

Cuffs are my favorite to make- I enjoy working with scrap leather.

I remembered some of the cool costumes in the most recent Robin Hood movie with Cate Blanchett and Russell Crow- All that bound corsetry and leather armor. Sexy and tough.

I'm partial to this one, above, because that's a found piece of metal sheet with numbers and letters carved into it. Black, masculine, found object and asymmetrical- that ticks all my boxes.

Getting Serious

Sometimes you just have to get serious about what you do, why you do it and what you want to achieve. Time moves too quickly.

This is what happening to me at the moment.

I'm getting serious: sewing like a demon, learning to create new patterns, learning about fabric and trends. I'm not holding back on what I can achieve

Business cards are done, the web site is up and running and I have been accepted into Eveleigh Artisans Market .

Spoke to a shop today regarding stocking them with my clothes. I'm sick of 'goofing off', procrastinating and holding back. Lack of confidence has been replaced with confidence and drive.

Maybe it comes with maturity- this getting serious, maybe it happens when the time is right.

I have the fire and I'm serious about it.

The Last Film I Ever Saw

I decided that it was time to start selling my clothes. I am having them sewn up at the moment but here is a taste of what is to come.

I am not making clothes for the shy, the preppy and blend-ins. Sorry.

These are seriously bad-ass drop-crotch army pants. Made from vintage wool with a three-quarter leg, permanent cuffs, flat- felled seams (like in jeans) attached belt and four pockets. Button on back is vintage British Military.

I love this look- I'm sure I am not alone.

Pants inspired by the song "Last Film" by 80's band Kissing The Pink.

Sometimes you just have to leap into things with all your spirit and see what happens. Do you do that?

Today (YESTERDAY) marks 45 years hanging around on the planet making stuff that looks like art. Life has had it's ups and downs over the years. I went through long periods of depression and low self esteem. I had periods of not wanting to create- my darkest years they were.

At the moment life is getting better and better. I'm more in control, happier and creating more. It's been a long road from crap beginnings.
So what have I done all this time?

I painted some pictures for a while...

Then I made some assemblages...

Then I thought it would be cool to make jewellery...

This year I'm creating a line of mens clothing...

Making art and craft is what I do. It is who I am. It is what I love doing. But half of this is the actual doing, the other half is having it looked at and enjoyed by others.

So...

Thank you to everyone for all your support over the past two years. Thank you for all your kind comments and words of support- I really do love you all.

CAPPING IT ALL OFF

Spent the last few days sewing up some caps and searching the internet for some good patterns and instructions. For a good basic pattern check out: Combat Cap . It doesn't get any easier than this pattern.

It's what you do to the basic pattern that will make it yours. In my case doubled the height to give it a floppy effect that can be worn several ways. I also detailed the visor.

Caps makes great use of leftover fabric.

This next one is from this tutorial-the Eddie Cap. It's more of a stream train driver look.

Both are very easy and will take less than an hour each.

These are all made with (leftover) wool suiting with satin pin-stripe lining.

Easy, scrap fabric and made in less than an hour. What more could you want?

After seeing the movie The Book of Eli once again had me thinking about what jeans I would wear in the post-apocalypse world.

For a start, they need to be durable with no zips or clips that would not be replaceable- buttons only. Stitches need to hold- triple or quadruple would be good. Maybe a secret pocket (for lip balm- a scarce commodity in Eli, or for antibiotics.

Pocket for a knife. Heel guards. Extra pockets. Heavyweight denim. Button fly.

So, I made them to those specs.

My new favorite jeans. The Jeans of Eli.

The apocalypse may not be tomorrow- but at least I will be prepared.

And wearing my own brand.

THE BAGMAN COMETH

Just in case you thought I was being a slouch when it comes to sewing this is what I have been up to: more bags.

Beautiful calf leather came my way via my favorite recycling center- Reverse Garbage. Half a dozen skins for a song.

I knew instantly that a handful of bags was going to test my leather sewing skill to the max. I discovered sewing leather is as easy as any other material.

A leather needle for the sewing machine is a must. Gluing the seams before sewing makes for accurate sewing- there is no ripping out stitches so you have to do it once and do it well.

All these designs are from Yoshimi Ezura's Umamai books. Sure, they are in Japanese but the illustrations are clear enough to follow. If in doubt a Katakana virtual keyboard has helped.

The lines are clean, the edges are raw, and the proportions divine.

Now, if I can only score some more leather...

Back in the saddle this week throwing together some bits of metal and whatever junk I could lay my hands on.

There is some sort of 'spirit of adventure' with this lot and I really enjoyed making them up. Not that it is ever a chore but these seemed different some how.

I'm actually starting to run out of 'bits' and 'junk' which is a bit worrying in because the local thrift shops here in Newtown, Sydney are all 'designer'.
"How much is that broken chain?"
Thrift store attendant says. "$10 dollars, as is."
"What about the 70's sewing pattern?"
"Five."
"Bloody hell" I grumble.
Good Will my arse.
They are just getting way above themselves and the stock just sits there.

The 'junk of the junk' in my boxes are looking good at the moment. I'm surprising myself with what can be made with junk I thought I wouldn't use six months ago.

The Meaning of My Life and Death

Time to share with you a collage project created late last year.

This artwork was created when I realised the pain and suffering I had been experiencing my whole life from being an abortion survivor.

I was born a creature from monster parents.

The book charts my conception, my prayers for life and my eventual birth as part of the universe.
Along the way my mutant genes fight for the right to live.

To not be wanted by my mother and be told so shaped who I am.

I have always battled to protect myself from the outside world and constant danger that exists.

To survive these horrific beginnings I barricaded myself against the world and against love.
My lashing out in anger was a protectionist measure- kill or be killed.

Death haunted my every dream with constant images of blood, gore and faceless beings that would hunt me every single night.

This book helped me release and process the lifelong pain, sadness and anger I feel.
I am a child unwanted by the very people who should have loved, protected and accepted me.

But in the book, as in life, I am (re)born into the cosmos.

I am a survivor and can never, ever die.

Japanese Sewing Patterns

I love Japanese sewing books.

Sewing using the wonderful Japanese pattern books like Drape Drape is economical-14 patterns for around $28.00- that's less then $2 per pattern. Also, the designs a beautiful and modern.

So allow me to share my passion for these great books with a walk through of garment making.

Frightening at first, a dozen patterns on one sheet takes a little getting used to. Pattern pieces are always numbered around the edge of the sheet. Looks like modern art or the Nazca Lines in Peru.

Highlighting the pattern pieces makes the whole process a lot easier. Use a different colour marker for each new garment.

With Pattern Magic, there is only instructions- it's up to you to create the patterns from scratch. This is highly rewarding and time consuming. Most books have patterns ready to go.

Using a French Curve and a straight edge is the best way to duplicate the pattern onto tracing paper. Freehand is just not accurate enough.

This is the best time to add seam allowances. You will find most are 1cm (It's all metric). If the fabric layout image (in the book) has no indication then it is 1cm, otherwise seams will be indicated with a number- 0.6cm for necklines or perhaps 3cm for hems.

Mark all details on the pattern pieces. Eventually you will have a mountain of patterns so it pays to stay organised from the start. I keep all my patterns flat in a very large card folder.

Next it's muslin time. Cheap fabric can always be found at thrift stores for making samples. Sometimes I hem the edges, most times not. It's really about do the pieces fit together? (Pattern Magic!) and does the garment fit?

Better to mess up on $2 a meter than a $20 wool jersey.

Holiday Week

Baxter enjoying the coastal holiday. Culburra (it means four winds)- three hours drive south of Sydney. One beautiful week away with only the smell of the sea and the sound of the surf.

Very strange Gothic style house (strange for an Australian coastal town that is)

...with an even stranger tower. Now what would you use that for? The wagon wheel pinned to the wall adds to the absurdity of the design. This house just fascinates me. It is just too spooky- see upstairs curtain pulled aside. Are they watching me?

A daily friend who squawked until bread or cake appeared. He woke me most mornings- even flew into the bedroom to get his cake.

Bird bones found on the beach. There must have been an ocean storm before we arrived.

Sun bleached bird skulls. (Petrels) Most people collect shells. Good for them.

Jewellery For The Week

This is how my jewellery always starts: arranging bits of metal. Some pieces make the grade and others are ditched. I like doing a few at once: bouncing between them to create some sort of story. The story emerges as I work.

I just keep adding bits till they look finished. With these I wanted to use these chains I had laying around for a while. Everything is secured with tube rivets or micro-bolts which are the strongest, neatest and easiest way to secure assemblage jewellery. In the photo below, the back of the piece is very clean.

Speaking of neat, here is my studio at it's most organised- plastic take-away containers work a treat for storing sorted pieces.

Wearing A Triangle- Pattern Magic 2

The beautiful and curious Japanese book Pattern Magic 2 has taken it's hold of me. I absolutely love the whole process of working from this book. From drafting the patterns to the exploration of shape to seeing the finished piece it is truly a wonderful journey.

This is Wearing a Triangle and it really is a triangle with arms. Four panels make the piece.

It is art and clothing in one.

I'm already onto the next one- Twist Turn Top made with unusual and brilliant pattern pieces.

Tokyo Love Song- Yohji Yamamoto Style

I don't mind a bit of a challenge.
When it comes to clothes I love to wear (and sew) interesting and challenging pieces. This is once such piece. This is a free pattern by Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto.

This is such an amazing pattern, although I found it hard to work out at first, then my brain did a triple somersault and it 'clicked'. Then I wondered what the fuss was all about. The piece consists of two pieces which is brilliant in it's design and simplicity.

There is also an Alexander McQueen and a John Galliano pattern with over forty five pattern pieces in one jacket- which looks amazing and will be a major challenge.

For those tackling this Yohji piece here are some tips:

'Back piece' is the arms and back panel. The dart goes towards the neckline. Think of it like a shrug so sew the arms together.
The 'front' panel is like a collar that extends up and over. It is folded and attached.(the back is caught between the layers of the front.)
If you can visualize two tubes connected in a t-shape- one the arms and back, the other the front and collar.
Trace the pattern pieces from the A4 pdf and mock it up- this really helps.

Pattern Magic 2- Wearing A Square

My first sewing project from the amazing book

Pattern Magic 2.

Wearing A Square is pure origami.

Crazy looking to start with, I put a very long zipper in the

front and elongated the sleeves.

Fabric is a lined rayon. Odd shape. Odd fabric. If it were not for the four underarm gussets the jacket would be one piece of fabric.

Next to sew is Wearing A Triangle which makes this look tame. Stay tuned!

The Tailors Apprentice Part Two

Finished off the muslin for tailored pants this week. In-seam and lapped pockets were a chore.

Following the recommendations for the pattern produced pants with a classic 1975 fit using How Make Men's Clothes by Jane Rhinehart.

Now, I can't say I actually love them. There is plenty of room for improvement in the pattern. (drop that waist!) Good learning experience.

The book was great for creating the pattern but her construction explanations left plenty to be desired. I think instructions have changed a great deal over thirty five years. Long, convoluted sentences with tiny illustrations have been replaced by clear explanations and detailed photos. Thank goodness!

When I realized I couldn't follow her instructions I went with what seemed right.
