NEW COLLECTION: UNUSUAL START

Being a big Sci-Fi film fan I decided to go all-out with my next collection and go more into futuristic costume design. In a way I am going back to my roots and just use reclaimed materials, discarded fabrics and old clothes. The collection is going to look completely off-world.

Taking my starting point from films like Oblivion, Elysium, Mad Max and Star Wars the collection will be post-apocalyptic, grungy and layered.

As a strange start to the collection, the first piece I made was this helmet.

Allow me to run through the steps.

First, I sketched out the idea. This helped plan the sections of the helmet and meant I could cut it out in almost one piece.

A corrugated cardboard box gets cut up. I found hundreds of white sticky labels on the side of the road so I used them instead of masking tape.

The cardboard sections get joined and covered. I built up sections with more cardboard.

Next, a few undercoats and a couple of layer of black paint. Thinking it was going to be all black I did the whole thing.

I bought some chrome spray paint and masked off the lower section. Two coats was enough to give a good metal finish.

Then it was just a matter of knocking the shine back a bit and aging the helmet with some splatter and scratches. Allowing the paint to catch in the cracks and built-up areas add to the effect of a well worn helmet.

A few bits of text and a bar code (found) added some detail.

I found an old plastic bag- the type doonas come in, and used that as a visor. Luckily it was scratched up and had paint splattered over it from being used as a paint and tool bag.

An old metal strainer was perfect for the breathing hole.

Perhaps I will add more pieces to the outside- if I can find some cool plastic bits I will. For now, it's enough as it is.

The next step was a scarf section around the lower edge to cover my neck and bringing a bit of an organic feel to the helmet.

I had some old wool mesh fabric that was perfect and glued it into the inside.

Pretty much done for the moment.

Next time I will post some images that are inspiring the collection and the other props I will be working on.
