BLACK IS THE NEW GREEN?

Today I received my latest business cards. These thick and luscious cards are from Moo. I can sleep easy at night because these are made from sustainable forest wood pulp. The packaging they came in in recycled card and the card holder I received is from reclaimed card.
I'm no eco-warrior but I'm no eco-slacker (you read that term here first) either.

I see a lot of eco-this and eco-that bandied around with gay abandon within the fashion industry these days. Green really is the new black. But, to tell you the truth, half of it is crap. That's right. Crap.
Like I said, I'm no 'eco-goodie-two-shoes' but I can smell 'cashing-in' a mile away. Labels that are 'eco' using materials that are hardly sustainable. Bamboo is not so cool- plenty of chemicals used in it's production. Organic cotton still uses hundreds of litres of water to produce. Check out Waterfootprint.
I could go on and on.

"In the end sustainability and environmental friendliness of the clothing
industry depends on the entire life cycle of the garment. The entire
process needs to be taken into account before wide assumptions are
made about which fabric is better for the environment."

Synthetic Fabric vs Natural Fabric

All these is really just a ramble while I contemplate the eco-credentials of my new business cards. Moo really have it covered in that department- and they were still cheaper than Vistaprint.

These are my new as eco-as-as-you can-get swing tags made from recycled card, unbleached cotton (cotton??? nooooooo!!!) and hand stamped. Now I just have to worry about those damn inks.

Eco and sustainable are slippery little terms.

Actually I have seen t-shirts now maid from reclaimed cotton or synthetic materials- now that has to be the way of the future.

(Pardon my French. Practising for my month in France!)

LOVE the cards. We have ordered from MOO before and they were great!

The cards and tags look really good. The whole eco-friendly issue is so complex that it is hard to know what is best. At least you try to make sure your label has a conscience

The cards are as cool as you are.

It is so hard to know exactly what is the right eco choice is now, there are so many options and so much misinformation. When we started recycling there was no organized programs, we had to find places that would take glass, metal, newspaper etc ourselves. Then of course there was the gas involved in driving the stuff all over the place. Which never occurred to us in the 80's.

Anyway if I ever get/need/can justify business cards I think I will go with this option. Even though I'm not sure it is the best choice. Oh well.

People might want to think about ANOTHER HUUUGE waste of water: DYEING ONE'S HAIR.

Most people don't ever think about this: just how much water is polluted every year with HAIR DYE. And , brown and black dyes have been implicated in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and women continue to dye their hair while pregnant (Kourtney Kardashian, for one) Nice to see all this overweening concern for the welfare of future generations... thousands of gallons of precious water being used to feed out-of-control vanity while those selfsame people flatter themselves that they are 'green" *snort*

Sufiya- Never thought about that. Guess it goes along the lines of growing non-natives (Lots of water) Excessive car washing, hosing down the driveway....

Mairedodd- Another Moo fan! Thanks for the comment...I don't usually ramble on but when I do- watch out!

saw a "green" cheese ad the other day. It made me laugh. Made me think of moldy cheese, but it was somehow eco friendly and in a nice "green" package. 0oooo

I do like your new cards, Don. The whole "green" and "eco" thing can certainly be hard to pin down; catch-phrases often used as a selling point without any real validity. Good for you for digging into it!
