Machines That Go 'Ping"

I must be a kid. I love new toys. I love new toys that contain motors and sharp bits. Like that Monty Python skit with the doctors wanting the machine that goes 'ping'. That's me.

New machines that have fast motors and room for four spools of thread that make sewing faster, cleaner and easier.

Machines that trim those uneven edges of fabric while sewing them together and finishing said edges at the same time.

I now have one of those machines. Serger, over-locker, call it what you will- I call it my new toy.

It helps me make clothes from stretch fabric. First on my list was a hooded, sleeveless top. Okay, yes, I do like a hood. This was just some jersey fabric found at the local industrial waste shop.

One hours work and $1 worth of fabric. Rolled edges too. (I never knew what a rolled edge was until this week- thank you new machine)

Thought my new top would go well with an old favorite t-shirt I made a few years back. This was machine embroidered with inspiration from Jean Cocteau.
 He was so cool.

I love my new toy- it does everything. (Except go 'ping')

Cocteau was very cool!

After not sewing for 10 years, I'm in a mega "sewing mood". Unfortunately, my old machine can't even go in reverse anymore but I love a challenge, so I'm going to see what kind of embroidery it will still do. Sort of like mountain biking with a fixed gear bike...ping!

Ooh, quite envious. I have just felted some old sweaters preparatory to taking them apart and stitching them back together. It may be a slower process - oh well, spending a lot of time around the aging parent these days, something to do.

.
your machine is like a modern antikyream mechanism with a modern educated mind behind it, giving a new drea,m.

(i know i spelled that wrong)

.
can feel your joy across the sky

Who needs ping when you have lyrical drawings like these? New toy rocks!

aaah but does it do the dishes?
My very antiquated sewing machine goes 'ping' on a regular basis, but I don't think it's supposed to. It's steam driven, that would be from the steam arising from me every time I use the contraption. Yes sewing machines and I do not go well together.

I, too, just got a serger. There is a learning curve, but it is a wonder... Rolled hems? I made a dozen napkins for the holidays in about 40 minutes! that is after the cutting. That was a;so after making two nursing nightgowns for my expectant daughter......

Nice brotherhood between man and machine!
i like this ... sort of new friendship with new machine ... such enthusiastic description reminds me of Julio Verne spirit, positivism,
the hood and the embroidery look great-ly poetic too,
and the asymmetrical waistcoat is simple but stunning - i like, and need, and enjoy asymmetry "outside", as we´re not symmetrical beings inside, i guess.
thks for sharing your joy and work!
